James Canning (1810-March 20, 1892) was an Irish immigrant who made his wealth by Oakland and San Francisco real estate investing.
Was married to Mary Canning who was an extremely generous donor to the Oakland community. James left an estate valued at $500,000.
James Canning and his wife Mary are buried together in Saint Mary's Cemetery in Oakland.
