MEETING 02/28

  • Meeting format shift: Due to so many individual interests, we would like to start the beginning of meetings with a quick check-in of what people are doing or are interested in doing.
  • 51open hyperlocal maps--a collaboration proposed by Jenny. She is doing an internship with Open Technology Institute, who work on creating community mesh networks. Jenny is working on a map project that lives on a community mesh network that includes Sudo Room wireless. This map tells a story about the neighborhood, and can be used for disaster relief. This project was deployed in Red Hook, Brooklyn during Hurricane Sandy, giving first responders communication of emergency needs.
  • Marina and Vicky and Neil and Julio and Dennis would like to talk about goals and plans for 2013. Useful link: 2013 Planning Notes.
  • Let's make feature requests more accessible to users.

GK thoughts/notes! man, I wish I had come last night. I did too much physical labor yesterday and crashed. Hope it's ok to post these here- you came up with amazing, incredible, wonderful forward thinking ideas, and i just want to add some notes on the things i've also been thinking on!

  • Neighborhood groups: yes! i haven't seen vicky's email, unless it's the template one but very much yes. we have a list started of the groups that i could find, and reaching out would be wonderful. some of these groups have meetings, and i'd be happy to incorporate the meeting dates/times that i can find into that list so we can go in person if that's interesting to people.
  • Mapping: stumbled on some cool mapping (real maps) stuff yesterday, wanted to share it but didn't knwo where: Mapping Oakland is what looks like a program out of UC Berkeley that exists already and uses really small font. They are doing Cool Stuff and i think that one of the wiki-ers that's interested/knowledgable about maps needs to hit these guys up pronto! (Note: i found them from Oakland Geology who has us linked :) )
  • Linking to Oakland Wiki/Local News Media: I made a basic Oakland bloggers page yesterday- needs more info and clean up, and I think we should also have an oakalnd news page (i might get around to that today) with pages like oaklandnorth, oaklandlocal, etc. this might get us some good linkage if we follow up.
  • Events/notetakers: I think this is an idea to encourage via twitter, facebook and neighborhood lists. Tonya did a great job getting approval to post some notes from a Wasserman talk, and I started a page for Quan's sotc. This could be an awesome way to get people involved. might be good to use the page from the wasserman talk as a template to kind of say "hey, it's ok to post your opinions and your notes, this is a wiki!" if we could have a portal or some main way to access past and upcoming events so people could take ownership and start including their notes and feedback, this would be awesome. i don't know much about storify, but it would be also cool to include storify'd versions of these events here.
  • pages that haven't been made yet but should be: i've been trying to hyperlink pages that need to be made by fake creating them on pages, and i think it would be cool if we could explain that the broken links are pages that need content so people who are interested in those topics could fill them out!

ok, i'm done, hope this is welcome feedback, not hogging the mic! see you next week, hopefully!
