In 2011, Montera became a California Distinguished School, currently the only public(non-charter) middle school in Oakland to receive that distinction. The wood shop is another source of school pride, having celebrated over 50 years of teaching children the arts of woodcraft. It is the only remaining wood shop in an Oakland middle school .
