Work on the mosaic murals will begin in April. For more information, contact Lana Adlawan, Supervising Librarian for Teen Services, at (510) 238-7613 or [email protected]

Teen Design Competition

ARE YOU ARTISTIC? Do you love the Library?

Oakland Public Library needs your original artwork!  If you are between the ages of 13-18 and live or attend school in Oakland, enter OPL’s Teen Design Competition!

We’ll be transforming our cement trash cans at the Main Library into beautiful mosaic murals crafted out of your design. Submissions are accepted January 1- Feb 14, 2014 @ 5:30 pm at the Main Library TeenZone, located at 125 14th St.

How do I Submit a Design?

There are two possible layouts, and you can submit as many entries as you like for either (or both) categories:

Option One:  Wraparound Panoramic design for an estimated size of 69"x30" which would cover the three panels of a trash container (for example City of Oakland Skyline, the Universe, etc.)

Option Two:  Individual Portrait Panel design to cover a 23"x30" surface

Sample templates for each option are available in the TeenZone or you can download them here: Option One and Option Two. You can also use any 8.5 x 11” paper, indicating if it intended as a panoramic or single panel design.  Using paints, crayons, markers, colored pencils, or other mediums, submit hard copies of your original artwork, along with the Design Submission Form, to the Main Library TeenZone.

Unfortunately, due to size limitations on City of Oakland email accounts, electronic submissions cannot be accepted.

How will the Designs be Selected?

A panel of four judges, including at least one expert mosaic artist and two teens, will select winning designs.

Would you like to Volunteer?

We are looking for teen volunteers who are interested in helping with the mosaic work  afterschool or on the weekends. Most of the work will be done between March-May 2014. If you are interested in making your library a better place and having fun in the process, please contact Lana Adlawan, Teen Services Coordinator at (510) 238-7613.

Submission Deadline is Friday, February 14 at 5:30 p.m.  Winning designs will be announced by Monday, March 3.
