Press Release:

Announcing The First Deep East Oakland Mayoral Summit

The residents call it “Deep East Oakland.” Hit and run dumpers pile old mattresses and broken television sets down in front of foreclosed houses. Gun shots echo in the distance. Children play tag in fields where discarded hypodermic needles lay in full sight. It brings to mind a song called, “Little Child (Runnin’ Wild) from Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” soundtrack. The singer asks: “Where is the mayor who makes all things fair?/He lives outsides our polluted air…”

On October 10, 2014, the residents of the Deep East Oakland will get the opportunity to speak to those who would be the city’s next mayor. Mayor Jean Quan, Joe Tuman, , Dan Siegel, Bryan Parker, Rebecca Kaplan, and Ken Houston are confirmed participants in a debate about the future of the community.

The program is being co-sponsored by BASIC Ministry Church and Hood Movement 21, a faith-based, community collective centered in East Oakland. Pastor Mustafa Muhyee says, “I am excited. My community will get the opportunity to understand how the voting process works and that each pull of the lever can make a difference. Hood Movement 21′s founder and community director, Harry Williams said, “Finally, people in one of city’s most challenged neighborhoods will get the chance to speak directly to Oakland’s seat of power.”
