There are over 30 mosaic tile trash cans in Old Oakland. The mosaics were the inspiration of the Old Oakland Neighbors group and was funded by local grants and donations from the communityJuan Lopez of New World Mosaics is the lead artist. 1 The Picasso peace dove mosaic at 9th and Clay Street was created by Old Oakland residents in response to a violent fatal shooting that occurred a few feet away on March 10th, 2013.

The ones spotted so far have nature themes with birds and flowers, e.g., a California quail and California poppies. The third decorated side has been more or less the same as the non-bird side.
