Paul Mills was the executive director of the Oakland Art Gallery (one of the 3 museums merged to form the Oakland Museum of California in 1969).

Paul's son Mike Mills is the director of the 2010 movie “Beginners”, a film about Paul Mills’ coming out in late in life. Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor starred in this movie. This is an important connection between the museum and the LGBT community.

Also developed Bret Harte Boardwalk.
