Redwoods just live among us like other trees. Sometimes you'll see them behind a parking lot, or between some buildings. This is in Athol Plaza. (by mk30)There are many redwoods in Oakland! Most are California native Coast Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), but there are a few Dawn Redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) in locations like Mountain View Cemetery. Dawn Redwoods are native to China, and are a deciduous conifer that lose their needles on a seasonal basis.
Oakland Redwoods:
- Redwoods that were used as navigational aids by people in ships who were navigating the bay
- secret redwoods in people's backyards and in between abandoned lots
- redwoods in Redwood Regional Park, Leona Heights Park and Joaquin Miller Park [please add more parks with redwoods!]
- Old Survivor - the oldest redwood in the East Bay, located high on the south side of Horseshoe Canyon in a hard-to-reach location that saved it from destruction during the redwood rush -- that and the fact that it was a damaged specimen not worth the effort to fell
- the Dawn Redwood at Mountain View Cemetery
