Rose's Place was a hamburger joint at 3616 - 35th Avenue, run by Rose Honey for almost 45 years, from at c.1938 to the 1980s. Honey retired at 85 years old.
She took over when the previous operator said "the hell with it" and walked out. 1 The restaurant was small, with 8 stools at the counter. The business originally started in the corner building next to the liquor store, and Honey lived in the back; she moved the business to 3616 in the 1950s when the original building was demolished. 2
It was a popular spot with the local Hells Angels. According to her grandson, "She was all of about 4'11" but she was feisty, and wouldn't stand for any bad behavior by the bikers. They always respected her and protected her."
Patricia Hale was a waitress there c.1967. 3 Despite the small space, there was at least one pinball machine. 2
Family
Rose Leah Garses (Honey) (September 4, 1893 – September 9, 1984) was born in Copperopolis, California. She married Warren Lester Honey (October 1882 – May 16, 1917), also of Copperopolis, and they had 3 daughters: Alice L. Honey (Otto), Inez Lualye Honey (Owen), and Elizabeth Estelle "Betty" Honey (Keener). After Warren died in 1917 in a mining accident in Yerington, Nevada, Rose raised the children herself.
