Rev. Samuel Bookstaver Bell (September 17, 1817 – December 27, 1897) moved with his wife to Oakland in 1853 as missionaries for the Presbyterian church. Bell founded the First Presbyterian Church in Oakland, and became its first pastor.

Dr. Bell was one of the founders of the College of California, which later became the University of California, Berkeley.

Both Bell, born in New York and his wife, from Cleveland, Ohio were descended from Revolutionary ancestors. Harmon Bell was their son.
