The Story Readers are a group of people that volunteer for Books for Wider Horizons at the Oakland Public Library. Right now (June, 2013), they're looking for volunteers who enjoy children's literature and enjoy reading to kids. These volunteers will receive a free training series in the art of storyreading led by Gay Ducey, a children’s librarian and nationally renowned storyteller.

Once trained, these volunteers will work with children's librarians to read at Head Start Centers in Oakland. The Story Readers present 30 minute story times once a week.

According to the website, "Story readers establish a close tie with the children they work with. Children often eagerly await weekly visits from their library volunteers." This sounds very rewarding!

Bi-lingual volunteers encouraged! Readers come from all ages and walks of life. Volunteers need to attend all trainings and commit to 6 months of reading.  Dates and times are listed below. They're all at the Rockridge Branch. Pre-registration is required: Call Celia Jackson at (510) 238-7453 or [email protected] to register or learn more.
