Studio One Art Center, Oakland, California 1
Studio One Art Center is a historic community arts center in North Oakland. The arts center stands on the site of what was originally the Ladies' Home Relief Society Children's Home, built in 1894, which share a campus with the Matilda Brown Home for elderly women. After being bought by the city, the space first became the North Oakland Recreation Center in 1947. The land and building was acquired for a total of $27,500 by the Recreation Committee of the North Oakland Area Council . It went on to become a city-run arts program for youth and adults (Norman, 2006).
Due to seismic dangers, the masonry building went through a massive renovation from 2005 to 2009 at a cost of $12.7 million.
On January 6, 2009 the Studio One Arts Center (Ladies Relief Society Children's Home) was designated Oakland Landmark #141, under Zoning Case #LM06-340. The building is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
