Trader Joe’s is a private chain of grocery stores which sells many organic, gourmet, and vegetarian foods, along with an extensive selection of inexpensive wines at reasonable prices. Founded by Joe Coulombe, for whom the store is named, and owned by Theo Albrecht, a German businessman, there are currently 395 Trader Joe’s, of which Oakland has two.
Store employees are well paid for grocery stores, starting at $10 to $12 per hour; supervising crew start at $35K to $50K annually, and store managers in the low six figures. Trader Joe’s provides full healthcare benefits to all employees and their dependents if they average 20 hours per week, and a 10 percent discount on items bought at the store.
