OAKLAND BUSINESS HOUSES IN 1854

Among the interesting documents relating to the early events in Oakland, which have been sent in to the Oakland Pioneers, is a copy of a four-page publication called "The Leader," announced as published in "San Francisco and Oakland," and bearing date September 16, 1854. In this paper are a number of Oakland advertisements, among which appear the following:

American House, Corner of Franklin and Second Sts., Josselyn & Pollet, proprietors.

Sam Bell McKee, Attorney at Law and General Collecting Agent, East Side of Broadway, near the Plaza. 

Villa Hotel, Broadway, Oakland. Grand Ball every Saturday and Sunday evenings. Best liquors and cigars constantly on hand.

O'Gradey & Rudsdell's Livery Stable, "near the steamboat landing." "Ladies' and Gentlemen's first-class saddle-horses, warranted well broke and safe."

Union Bakery & Restaurant, east side Broadway, between Second and Third. Parker & White, proprietors.

Oakland Livery Stables, Broadway, near the Steamboat Landing. F. K. Shattuck & Co.

Washington Market, Broadway above Second street. Henry Speight.

Tattersall's Livery Stables, Broadway, near First. Coburn & Carlyle, proprietors.

McDevitt & Rosy, house, sign and ornamental painters, etc.

Oakland Saloon, corner Broadway and First. Eames & Parker, proprietors.

College School, corner Harrison and Twelfth, Tuition $6 per month. Henry Durant, Principal.

Artemas Davison, Wheelwright and Blacksmith, Broadway, near the Steamboat Landing

Dr. Carter, corner Third and Broadway. 

Oakland Post Office, at the Uncle Sam Saloon, corner Broadway and Second

Grocery, L. Johnson, at Horton's Old Stand, corner Third and Broadway.

Oakland Bakery & Coffee Saloon, Broadway, between Second and Third.

Ladies' Saloon elegantly fitted up, expressly for ladies. Also furnished rooms to let. Geo. H. Monroe, proprietor.

Redwood House, Broadway, between Sixth and Seventh. John Taylor, proprietor.

Howe & House. blacksmiths, etc., Second between Broadway and Franklin.

Democratic Headquarters, Broadway, between Second and Third, best wines and liquors at 12 1/2 cts. per glass, J. Baker, proprietor.

Flour and Grain Store, next door to the Eagle House. Juells A. Reuff, proprietor.

Oakland Grocery, H. B. Smith, Broadway, between Third and Fourth.

W. H. Baxter, Sadter, corner Broadway and Third.

Oakland Burton Ale House, corner Third and Broadway.
