Yoshi's Oakland - Oakland

Yoshi's Oakland is a unique sushi bar and restaurant currently located in Jack London Square. Established in 1972 by three friends, Yoshie Akiba, Kaz Kajimura, and Hiroyuki Hori. Yoshi's features live jazz and has hosted legendary jazz greats such as Betty Carter, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Diana Krall, Branford Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, Harry Connick Jr. and Oscar Peterson among hundreds of others. ¹

For a long time, Yoshi's lived on Claremont near College in a small, house-looking building; it was actually a converted laundromat and held only 100 people.

For 10 months, Yoshi's joined names and operations with Keystone Korner, a famous San Francisco jazz venue that had closed in 1983. The partnership between Yoshi's' owner and Keystone Korner proprietor Todd Barken ended with tense relations in July 1993. Co-owner Kazuo Kajimura reported "He [Barkan] really brought us a lot of creative, exciting bookings. He put us back on the map. But he let the financial part just fall apart." ²
