Youth Radio is a nonprofit that trains youth ages 14-24 in radio production and helps youth produce original radio content. Youth Radio is a 20-year-old organization with chapters in Oakland, Washington DC, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Their HQ is in Oakland at 1701 Broadway, on the corner of Broadway and 17th St. downtown.

Youth Radio offers a range of free training opportunities in broadcast journalism, radio, video, music and web production, engineering, media advocacy and literacy. Using new media and technology as a “hook”, our organization provides stable, long-term guidance for youth as they transition from middle to high school, from high school to college, and into meaningful career paths.
Youth Radio programs are open to youth ages 14-18, with advanced programs open to young adults up to 24 years of age. Since our inception in 1992, we have focused our outreach efforts on under served youth populations. Currently, our high-school youth focus emphasizes girls (55%), low-income youth (80%) and young people of color (80%).
Oaklandish's Youth Radio t-shirt designDuring the Trayvon Martin protest on July 15th, 2013, the windows at Youth Radio were smashed. They raised a bunch (how much?!) money to replace the windows. Oaklandish also created a t-shirt honoring Youth Radio, and stated that the organization would receive all proceeds from the sale of the shirts. Order your own here.
