Garfield Elementary School by greenkozi

Garfield Elementary School is an OUSD elementary school at 23rd Avenue and East 16th Street. It has been in existence since c.1928, and was named for the 20th U.S. President, James A. Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881. 1

Garfield School

Although Garfield Elementary's webpage says it started about 1928, as far back as 1884 there was a Garfield School at the location.

Miss Ellen Gibbs was the principal of Garfield School, a grammar school which opened about 1884. Miss Gibbs was still the principal 14 years later in 1910. 2

In 1887 there were only two teachers, Miss Kate Marsh and Miss Frances Murray. H. K. Crittenden was the janitor.

In 1893, Miss Clara F. Fellows was the vice principal, and she lived at the Arlington Hotel.

In 1910, Miss Mechy taught cooking. 3

Garfield School was destroyed by an arson fire in 1924. 2 It may have been the work of Willie Fisher.
