As of 2013-06-10, the following 1300+ tags are unique (appearing exactly once in all of OW) and, as part of housekeeping, should probably be deleted en masse (if there were an easy, and preferably automatic, way to do that). Actually, a handful of the more potentially useful single-word tokens – e.g., “abortion”, “Army”, “astronomy” etc.; perhaps 50 or so – might remain, as they might find use later. But probably at least 1200 of these should go – they contribute nothing, and only serve to skew tag-cloud results.
- (This page is called “testfoo” because when I tried to create a new page called “test”, it instead resolved to a former page by that name!)
- I considered straining out and reserving all single-word tokens to focus first on the lengthiest offenders, then realized that sorting by length would also work for the time being. So … start at the bottom!
- Too bad there’s no way to jump straight to, not the tag, but the article containing the tag.
- Finally, if Phil sees this, it might inspire him to consider creating similar (but ideally, more automated) maintenance functions for all of localwiki, because OW sure can’t be alone in benefiting from data validation!
- GK sez: I agree with Himy’s caution- we must be careful about deleting certain tags that will/can be used in multiple places. Also good to check that the tag we use is the “right” one, ie: the one that’s already used in other places. -gk
- 2013-06-10 3:40 pm — Holy wowza, you guys are impressive! I got back from errands and … over 200 tags were pruned before I could even jump in. And this idea of annotating any tags that anyone feels should stay … yes, by all means : this is about data validation – about cutting out deadwood to tighten up what we have (and make it easier to use), not create new difficulties for anyone.
-
a note on pages with special characters like slashes and accents: a search for “cesar chavez library” won’t turn up the page unless we have it tagged that way , because our page has it properly spelled with the accent (i think that’s a good example), so we need to keep those tags, even if they seem one and done. crufty, yes. essential? also yes. (ex: causa justa/just cause.) -gk
- Good point! Please hang on to the “Bahai” tag!
-
9:11 pm— incredible burst of activity, tons of tags pruned … but as the day wore on, it was like the tide came back in as people had second thoughts, etc. Still, we now have a good record of singleton tags to leave alone because they’ll probably grow, and there are still hundreds which could stand paring. But that’s probably enough for tonight unless anyone really needs to burn that oil!
