The Pointer Sisters - Oakland

Bonnie, Anita and Ruth in 1974 ¹The Pointer Sisters are a hugely successful R & B group from Oakland. The group has included various of the sisters, their daughters and granddaughters over the years, but was best known as a quartet with sisters Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June, and then a trio after Bonnie left the group to pursue a solo career.

Family

Elton Pointer married Sarah Silas (Pointer) in Prescott, Arkansas, on July 20, 1941. In addition to Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June, Elton and Sarah also had two sons, both born in Arkansas.
- Aaron Elton Pointer (born April 19, 1942) is a gifted athlete, and played basketball at McClymonds High School along with his cousin Paul Silas. He went pro in baseball, playing for the Houston Astros (originally the Houston Colt .45s).
- Fritz Herman Pointer (born November 1943) also played sports at McClymond and later at Creighton University in Nebraska with Paul Silas. He is a college professor, and co-authored Fairytale: The Pointer Sisters' Family Story along with Anita.
- Ruth Esther Pointer (born March 19, 1946) began her vocal training as the junior choir director at Elton's church ²
- Anita Marie Pointer (January 23, 1948 – December 31, 2022) was a singer and songwriter
- Patricia Eva "Bonnie" Pointer (July 11, 1950 – June 8, 2020) began singing at Elton's church. In 1969, she and June formed a duo called The Pointers - A Pair; Anita joined later that year, and they became The Pointer Sisters.
- June Antoinette Pointer (November 30, 1953 – April 11, 2006) attended Edison Elementary School, Elmhurst Junior High, and Castlemont High School.
