PHILOMATH — Kandie Mendenhall delivered a run-scoring single in the sixth to lift Philomath High to a 3-2 victory over Stayton in the nonleague softball season opener.

Playing on a wet, sloppy field, the Warriors turned two inning-ending double plays. Both times they escaped a bases-loaded jam.

Deanna Page scored the winning run after hitting a one-out double in the sixth. She also earned the pitching win with four innings of scoreless relief, striking out seven and allowing one hit.

Kayleen Hannaway had a two-run single in the bottom of the third to tie the game.

Philomath will play at Cascade on Thursday.

PHILOMATH Big hits and strong pitching was too much for Philomath to overcome in a 9-0 nonleague loss to Marist in five innings.

The Warriors (1-1) fell behind 5-0 in the second as Kayla Braud hit a three-run home run.

PHS struggled with the pitching of Nyree White, striking out 10 times.

White tossed a one-hit shutout and had a home run and a double at the plate.

“They hit the ball very well and we struggled at the plate today,” PHS coach Dave Dunham said.

CAVE JUNCTION The Philomath High softball team rolled to a nonleague doubleheader sweep of Illinois Valley on Saturday.

The Warriors (5-3, 2-0) won the first game 15-0, then took a 17-3 win in the second.

In the first game, the Warriors took advantage of 15 hits and 10 errors by Illinois Valley. Ashley Moe tossed a four-hit shutout for her first varsity win and hit a triple.

The Warriors got another 15 hits in the second game.

Maggie Stymer went 4-for-5 with a two-run double and four RBIs; Cassy Shenk added three hits with three RBIs and Deanna Page had two hits, including a double and had four RBIs.

PHS hosts Newport on Friday.

Hannaway single lifts PHS into first

PHILOMATH — Kourtney Hannaway singled in twin sister Kayleen Hannaway in the bottom of the 10th to lift Philomath into first place in the Val-Co League with a 7-6 victory over Sweet Home on Friday.

Kourtney Hannaway had two hits and two of Philomath’s three RBIs.

The Warriors (3-3, 2-0) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth when Cassy Shenk stole home.

Sweet Home tied the game in the seventh with two runs, but the Huskies were unable to score again.

Deanna Page (3-3) pitched nine innings of relief, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out 11 to pick up the victory.

Philomath plays at Illinois Valley today in a nonleague contest.
