James McCall was sheriff of Lawrence County in 1902-1903.
1902: removed an unnamed African American male from Powhatan jail to hide from a lynch mob - man was accused of assaulting a 9 year old girl.2
In 1903, he was returning to Powhatan from Walnut Ridge with his wife, baby, and 2 prisoners. They crossed the river in a skiff. The skiff overturned, drowning his child, and sending his wife down river. His wife and baby were recovered. The baby had drowned, but his wife lived. The two prisoners supposedly returned themselves to the jail unattended. 1
