Overview
The largest of the Quad Cities, Davenport was founded in 1836 by Antoine LeClaire (but named after his friend, George Davenport), and incorporated three years later. Originally, the land was owned by the Sauk, Fox and Ho-Chunk Native Americans. In 1803, France sold the land to the United States under the Louisiana Purchase. The Rock Island Railroad built the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River in 1856, thereby connecting Davenport and Rock Island. While Davenport residents have experienced troubles from the Great Depression and farm crisis of the 1980's, many recent renovations have occurred to revitalize the area, including repairing Modern Woodmen Park, building the Skybridge and the Figge Art Musuem.
