South Rock Island Township offers services and property assessment to its residents. They produce a newsletter that is regularly distributed to residents. This township covers the area south of 18th Avenue between the city's eastern and western borders. The other half of Rock Island is covered by the Rock Island Township. The Township administers manyservices for residents, including an annual flu and pneumonia clinic, leaf bag distribution, voter registration, employment assistance, free copies, faxes and lamination, U.S. flag disposal, and free notary services. Financial resources for needy residents include a monthly general assistance program; medical assistance; emergency assistance for families with children; FEMA housing assistance; senior food vouchers and denture program; bus tickets for seniors, handicapped individuals, and unemployed residents; temporary handicapped placards; gently used clothes, shoes, medical equipment, toiletries, and household items; and a blanket giveaway. The township building is available as a warming or cooling center in the summer and winter and is also available for free rental. The township offers small garden plots near town hall where families or individuals can grow their own produce.

Residents engaging in spring cleaning are encouraged to donate new or gently used items such as medical equipment, office supplies, furniture and household items, hygiene products, knitting supplies, gardening equipment, and items for a community library (e.g. books, CDs, DVDs, etc.). The township also collects old eyeglasses for the Lions Club, is a drop off site for the Box Tops for Education program, and is an official collection site for Cell Phones for Soldiers. In September, the township is a drop-off site for Rock Island High School's participation in the Student Hunger Drive.

The Township Assessor assists homeowners with tax exemptions, establishes the value of land within the Township's boundaries.

As of the 2010 Census, the population of the South Rock Island Township was 18,407, and it contained 6.97 square miles of land and a total area of 7.48 square miles.
