In March 2011, the Mordecai Citizens Advisory Council and the Chelsea Realty Group partnered to develop a community project to provide a face lift to the outside of the old barber store located on North Person Street, Raleigh.

The project included residents and local businesses from the Mordecai Community and Historic Oakwood Neighborhood.. Community residents donated their time, skills, resources and gifts by painting, power washing, designing and lending a hand in any way necessary.

In the winter of 2011, The Mordecai Citizens Advisory Council launched the Barbershop "Window" Art Gallery. The Art Gallery is completely driven by community volunteers with the  goal to provide beautiful art to the Person Street Business District. Large interior showcase boxes were constructed, so hanging and 3D art could be admired through the windows. Solar generated lights provide a glow of light. Art work will be changed out every month if art donations and volunteer resources allow.

Currently exhibiting is Clara K Johnson, who has been rotating her art work at the Barbershop Art Gallery for the last couple of months and will continue to "refresh" our views monthly!  Clara is a self-trained artist whose creative abilities were passed down by her maternal grandfather who, in 1917, created Johnson C. Smith University's mascot, The Golden Bull. Clara relocated from Rochester, New York to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1995 and enjoys painting, reading and traveling. You may see more of her art at Litmus Gallery and Studios located on West Cabarrus Street.
