Cameron Village in Raleigh was built by J.W. York in 1947 and opened in 1949. Known as the first shopping center built on the east coast, Cameron Village was also a planned residential neighborhood. Homes are a mix of townhomes, apartments, and single family homes. Currently nominated for the National Register of Historic Places, Cameron Village contains many mid-century modern ranch homes.
Cameron Village is also known as the "mecca of ITB shopping".
In the 1970's and 80's, there was an area (now located underneath the current Cameron Village Library) called The Village Subway where bands played.
