The Carolina Hurricanes is a local National Hockey League team that plays in the PNC Arena (formerly RBC Center) in Raleigh. The franchise, previously known as the Hartford Whalers, moved to North Carolina in 1997. Hockey was relatively new to the south when the team arrived, but fans embraced the pastime and soon added elements of southern culture (such as cheerleaders and pre-game tailgating) to the experience. The team defeated the Edmonton Oilers to win the 2006 Stanley Cup.
