Overview
Dudley DeWitt Carroll Hall, more commonly known as Carroll Hall, is an academic building on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's campus. Carroll Hall houses UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Media and Journalism. The building is home to classrooms, a large auditorium that holds about 300 seats, computer and multimedia labs, a library, conference rooms and faculty offices.
Carroll Hall is located on Polk Place, the lower quad on UNC-Chapel Hill's campus.

History
The construction of Carroll Hall was completed in 1953. Dudley DeWitt Carroll — the building's namesake — was the first dean of UNC's School of Commerce, which was the first iteration of UNC's business school. Carroll Hall first housed the business school, which is now known as the Kenan-Flagler Business School and has since moved to the McColl Building on South Campus.
The building has undergone several expansions since its initial construction. In 1971, several new wings were added and other structural additions were made to the existing building. Since 1999, Carroll Hall has been home to the UNC School of Media and Journalism.
The School of Media and Journalism
The school offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as specialized short courses and workshops.
Within the undergraduate degree program, there are nine specializations:
- Advertising
- Public Relations
- Reporting
- Broadcast & Electronic Journalism
- Editing & Graphic Design
- Business Journalism
- Photojournalism
- Strategic Communication
- Multimedia
For graduate students, the school offers two master's degree programs, a doctoral degree program and a certificate program.
The journalism school boasts a variety of award-winning faculty members, students and projects. Several prominent UNC alumni have been educated in the journalism school, including:
- Charles Kuralt, a former CBS Evening News broadcast journalist
- Frank Bruni, op-ed columnist and former chief restaurant critic at The New York Times
- Carl Kasell, NPR newscaster
- Brooke Baldwin, CNN anchor
