Howling Cow Ice Cream is an ice cream brand created and operated by North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. The idea for Howling Cow ice cream started as a research project in the 1940s. The ice cream was first introduced to the public in the 1970s at the North Carolina State Fair. In 1980, a cafe in one of the school’s main libraries, D.H. Hill Jr. Library, began to serve the ice cream. Finally, in 2008, the name Howling Cow was officially given to the ice cream. Since then, the brand has expanded and become a staple on the campus of NC State. The milk and cream used in the ice cream comes from over 300 cows that live on the school’s  Dairy Research and Teaching Farm. The ice cream itself is made in the Feldmeier Dairy Processing Lab, which is located on NC State’s campus.
