In November of 2011, the City of Raleigh was awarded access to approximately four acres that are home to one of the Piedmont’s most expansive variety of flowers, shrubs, plants, grasses, groundcovers and trees.

The Joslin Gardens site is the former home of Mary Coker Joslin and the late William Joslin, who were inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame in 2011. The Joslins purchased the land in 1951 when the location was on Raleigh's outskirts. For six decades, the Joslins maintained a garden of rare and native plants and trees and in recent years opened the garden to the public twice a year.

The park is owned by the City of Oaks Foundation, a tax-exempt foundation developed as a collaboration of the Joslin family and the City of Raleigh. Maintenance of the garden is provided for by the Joslin Gardens Endowment Fund and a contract between the foundation and the City.
