The Mountains-to-Sea Trail stretches 1000 miles across North Carolina, from the Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. Much of the maintenance of the trail is handled by volunteers, organized by the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.
A 22-mile section of the trail traces Falls Lake's south-western edge, connecting several camping areas that are part of the Falls Lake State Recreation Area and Blue Jay Point County Park. At its southern end, the trail will soon connect to the Neuse River Greenway near the tail-race of Falls Lake Dam.
This trail is broken into 2-to-3 mile sections between road access and parks, making it a great destination for family hiking.
Access to the City of Raleigh's Annie Wilkerson Nature Preserve Park is in the planning and permitting stage. This will connect the park to the section of trail between Raven Ridge Road and the Falls Lake Dam.
