The Neuse River is a body of water stretching from North Raleigh to the Palmico Sound east of New Bern. At 275 miles, it is the longest river located entirely within the State of North Carolina.
The river begins at the Falls Lake Dam west of Old Falls of Neuse Road and flows due east through the northern and eastern suburbs of Raleigh. The river crosses under several major roads in Raleigh such as Falls of Neuse Road, Capital Boulevard, Lousiburg Road, and I-540, following a winding path around numerous residential subdivisions. The river leaves the city west of the Auburn Knightdale Road bridge.
The Neuse River provides several recreational opportunities for Raleigh and surrounding communities. Among these are the Neuse River Greenway Trail, Horseshoe Farms Nature Preserve, and the Falls of Neuse canoe launch.
