Top of the Hill, known as TOPO to local residents and UNC-Chapel Hill students, is a restaurant, event space and bar overlooking Chapel Hill's Franklin Street. It was one of North Carolina's first distilleries and breweries and continues to make favorites like the Old Well White beer. All of the beer served is brewed on-site and the outdoor deck provides for a panoramic view of downtown.

The restaurant's head chef, a New Orleans native, serves Southern-inspired food, sometimes using the beer and spirits made at Top of the Hill in the recipes. Some favorites from the menu include:

  • Buttermilk Fried Chicken
  • Franklin Street Nachos
  • French Quarter Jambalaya

Since opening its doors in 1996, Top of the Hill brewery has won over 25 awards, including gold medals from the World Beer Championship for its Blue Ridge Blueberry Wheat, Ram's Head IPA and others.  Three beers stay on tap all year long: the Kenan Lager, Old Well White and Ram's Head IPA. The other three taps rotate between 20 different recipes.

After dinner hours,  Top of the Hill transforms into a favorite nightlife spot for the local college students and adults alike. The Back Bar provides for a more laid back atmosphere, with a pool table, foosball table, multiple televisions and dart boards. The Back Bar is specifically known for its trivia night on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. They also have a large Great Room that is able to be rented out for private events, ranging from wedding receptions to fraternity cocktails.
