Tom is a Senior Consultant and Advisor at Techné Verde, a research and consulting group based in San Francisco and New York. He provides consulting and advisory services to non-profit and philanthropic clients, specializing in knowledge management, organizational development, and cross-organizational collaboration on social justice and sustainability issues.
From 2008-2013, he was Global Head of Knowledge Management for the Open Society Foundations, where he led a project to develop an open source collaboration platform called KARL. The platform is currently used by the 40 independent organizations that make up the global Open Society network of Foundations. As an open source collaboration solution, the platform is also currently being used by 15 other international organizations including Oxfam GB, UN Environmental Program, and the European Foundation Centre.
Prior to becoming head of the knowledge management initiative, he was Director of Special Projects for the entire global network of foundations. In this role, Tom was involved in various organizational re-structuring projects, starting up new initiatives and serving interim executive management roles in Albania and Kazakhstan.
Tom also has a strong background in financial management having been a consultant at Deloitte Consulting and the Controller of a major hotel operation in New York City. He also served in the Peace Corps in western Russia where he established a regional NGO development center and lectured on various topics related to the transformation to the free-market economy.
