Mary Leas Stegall was elected to the City Council in November 2000 and served as Vice Mayor in 2004. On January 18, 2005, Mary was appointed to the Redding City Council to complete the term of Council Member Cibula who was elected to serve on the Shasta County Board of Supervisors. Mary won re-election to the City Council November 7, 2006. She was appointed an alternate Delegate for the 2008 Democratic Party Convention representing Hillary Clinton.
Ms. Stegall served as the Executive Director of Shasta County Women's Refuge, a private nonprofit agency serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault from 1992 to 2002, and she is a general partner in a partnership that owns and leases commercial real estate in Fresno and Modesto.
Born and raised in Fresno, Mary earned a B.A. from California State University, Fresno, and a M.A. in Public Administration from Golden Gate University.
Since moving to Redding in 1992, Mary served as Chair of the Mercy Medical Center Advisory Board, was a founding member and Chair of the Association of Nonprofit Professionals Shasta Region, and founding member and Chair of the Shasta County Health Improvement Partnership. Mary currently is a member of the Shasta Regional Medical Center Advisory Board,League of Women Voters and American Association of University Women.
Mary has two sons: Joaquin and Nathaniel, living in Clovis and San Jose respectively, and two grandchildren.
In addition to her new position as Vice Mayor, Mary also serves as Council liaison to the Community Service and Electric Utility Departments, the Community Development Advisory Committee, the American Public Power Association, the McConnell Foundation, the Northern California Power Agency, and the Regional Transportation Planning Agency.
