Rhode Island has collaborated with nearby Massachusetts to extend Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA, aka, The T) commuter rail service (Purple Line) to stops in Providence, Warwick (TF Green Airport) and North Kingstown (Wickford Junction).

The MBTA operates daily commuter rail service along the Providence/Stoughton Line from North Kingston, RI to Boston, MA, with several RI stops along the way.

General Info

Generally speaking, you can pay for your fare on-board the train with the conductor, at your originating station, or by downloading/using the MBTA's mobile ticketing app. If you travel during "peak times" and purchase your ticket on-board the train when you could have purchased it at the station, you will be charged an additional fee.

Fares are based on how far you travel through a system of zones, with downtown Boston representing the center (Zone 1).

Zone # O/W to Boston Monthly Pass
South Attleboro 7 $9.50 $291.00
Providence 8 $10.00 $314.00
TF Green Airport 9 $10.50 $329.00
Wickford Junction 10 $11.00 $345.00

South Attleboro

The South Attleboro station is located just over the Rhode Island border in nearby Massachusetts (Exit 2A off of I-95N). It offers one of the largest commuter parking lots in the area. It is possible to walk from the South Attleboro station to RIPTA service connections (Route 35) to reach other destinations in Rhode Island, but for various reasons, one must walk from the train station into Rhode Island territory via stairs/ramps, a bridge over the train tracks and sidewalks on surface streets to reach Cottage Street in Pawtucket. The walk is roughly 1/4 mile.

The cost for parking at this station ranges from $3-$4 per day. There are two ways to pay for parking:

  • in cash (exact change only) at the lot
  • Download the Parkmobile app and pay via credit/debit card.

Each parking space is numbered. To pay with cash, make note of your parking space number and proceed to the metal payment station located in each lot. Fold your cash into a small bundle and insert it into the slot that corresponds to your parking space number.

A small lot directly adjacent to the platforms usually fills early in the morning. A much larger space for commuter parking is located in numbered spaces in the shopping mall next to the train station. These spaces use the same payment system as the closer lot.
