  • Charles Pierce:
    • From 1834 to 1840, but little change occurred in the settlement. Willard Wood, Benjamin Wyman, and others were actively engaged in business and acquired property. Charles Pierce, an enterprising mechanic, built extensively, and laid the foundation for a large business in the manufacture of boots and shoes. He died suddenly and the business passed into the hands of Austin Foster. (p. 34-35)

      • Au sujet de Charles Pierce : [Citant Susan E. Blodgett, la plus jeune fille de Moses Pierce et la soeur de Charles] "Charles Pierce was six years of age when our father brought his family to Rock Island in 1824. Before he was eight of age, he met with an accident while on the ice above th upper dam, which not only made him a cripple for life, but also was the cause of most acute suffering throughout his boyhood and early manhood. [...] As he reached maturity, there were longer intervals between his periods of acute suffering. He learned the shoemaker's trade and began to work at custom shoemaking and cobbling to help support the family. [Fin de la citation de Mrs. Blodgett] Charles Pierce is a classic exemple of the self-made man. A couple of years before he came of age, he rented a room in the village and went into the cobbling business for himself. When ha had earned a bit of money, he invested it in materials, made a few dozen pairs of walking shoes and kids slippers, and travelled about the nearby townships until he had sold them all. This process he repeated until he had saved enough money to buy the plot of land where th Rock Island Canadian Customs Office stands today, onto which he moved an old tailor's shop that he had purchased. His boot and shoe making business continued to expand. In 1859-60, having sold his shop and had it moved across the street, Charles Pierce built a dam across the Tomifobia River, installed a water wheel, and put up a brand new factory. [...] He bought some more land in 1861. This plot was situated on the east bank of the river, opposite his business, and across the way from his parents' home, on what is now called Church Street. In 1862-63, he built a large house for himself. This house - the Charles Pierce Place - is today known as the Old Journal Building. [...] Charles Pierce did not have long to enjoy the fruits of his labor. On October 19, 1865, just two years after his house had been completed, he died at the age of forty-seven. He had never married. [...] The boot and shoe factory was sold to Austin T. Foster in 1866 but the house on Church Street remained in the family's possession for many years".
