  • Family of Ichabod Smith
    • “Ichabod Smith, Esq., was born in Surry, N. H., April 24, 1788, removed with his father’s family to Brownington, Vt., in 1798; came to Stanstead in 1810, and opened stores at Georgeville, Barnston and Eaton: began business at Stanstead Plain in 1813 in company with William Baxter and Wilder Pierce. In 1814 m. [married] Amanda, dau. [daughter] of Nathan Ward, Esq. […] Mr. Smith re-commenced business in 1816. In 1824 built a large brick store at the north en of the village and in 1836 sold that property, retired from business and removed to the south end of the street. He early received the appointment of magistrate, and was for many years actively employed in public affairs, was long a prominent and influential member of the Wesleyan Church, and a liberal contributor to benevolent institutions. He was one of the founders of the Stanstead Seminary and for many years president of the Stanstead County Bible Society. He d. [died] in January, 1867. She d. in March, 1871.”
