- MERRILL, Herbert Wesley, Smith Mills, Que. — Born at Fitch Bay, Que., Dec. 4, 1864, son of Moses P. and Augusta (Thompson) Merrill; English; grandfather came from New Hampshire with first settlers of Stanstead Co.; E. public schools and Stanstead College; followed contracting and building for 17 years later with J. H. Merrill, Smith Mills, Que.; in 1904 in company with Chas. R. Jenkins, purchased business of J. H. Merrill; in 1908 bought partner's interest in business ad conducted general lumber and mill business as sole owner; in 1912 formed partnership with Mr. Raymond taking over mill; I.O.O.F., C.O.F.; Liberal; Methodist; married Lizzie Faden, Stanstead, Que.; two sons, Harold H. and Ralph C.
