    • Au sujet de Stephen Foster : Né à Montpelier, Vermont, le 12 juillet 1806. Stephen Foster ouvre un commerce à Rock Island en 1830, avec son partenaire Col. Langdon. Ce dernier se retire en 1833 et le commerce se perpétue sous le partenariat de Spalding et Foster. Foster se retire en 1844, et Levi Spalding conserve le commerce jusqu’en 1859, au moment où il le vend à son fils William Spalding.
    • Autres aspects de la carrière de Foster : "Foster in the meantime had been appointed Cashier of the Bank [People's Bank à Derby Line] in 1855 and continued to serve in that capacity until 1890. Foster was also a Director of the Connecticut and Passumpsic Railroad, and Vice-President and Treasurer of the Massawippi Valley Railroad, and was prominent in the financing of the latter. He was a trustee of Stanstead Wesleyan College and a strong suporter of Stanstead South Congregational Church at Rock Island".

  • 1835: There was but one building (the old Yellow) btw the bridge and the Kelly House on the right hand of the road. On the other side were Foster & Spalding’s, the Gaylord and Walton building, the Wood tailor shop (now O’Rourke) and the Spalding dwelling house on the corner.

  • Stephen Foster: Not in business in Rock Island but in Derby in “Foster & Langdon” but in Rock Island for “Foster & Spalding” (15 y.). He retired in 1844.
  • Levi Spalding: Worked with S. Foster and after 1844 he worked with A. T. Foster and C. B. Burnham in “Foster, Spalding & Co.” The other 2 eventually left
    • Also owner of a grist mill and real estates.

  • Stephen Foster:
    • In 1828, Stephen Foster, in company with Col. J. Langdon, of Montpelier, Vt., built a store upon the site of that now occupied by the Spalding Brothers. They continued the business until 1833, when Col. Langdon withdrew, and Levi Spalding came in. In 1844, Mr. Foster withdrew, and since that time the business has been in the hands of the Spalding family. It may be mentioned here that Mr. Foster was the first merchant in the Eastern Townships that abandoned the sale of distilled spirits.

  • Family of Stephen Foster, Esq.
    • The ancestors of this family came from England in the 17th century, and settled in Massachusetts. Stephen Foster was b. in Montpelier, Vt., July 12, 1806. He commenced mercantile business in company with Col. J. Langdon, at Derby Line, in 1828, and they opened a store at Rock Island in 1830. In 1831, he m. Maria, dau. of Ara Kimball, Esq., of Barton, Vt. Col. Langdon withdrew in 1833, and the business at Rock Island was continued under the firm of Spalding & Foster until 1844, when Mr. Foster withdrew, and was afterwards appointed cashier of the People's Bank, at Derby Line. His wife, d. in 1854. In 1855, he m. Carrie B., dau. of D. Evans, Esq., of Providence, R. I. He was that year elected Mayor of the Municipality of Stanstead, and has sustained other offices of responsibility and trust. He has been among the foremost in the support of the ordinances of the gospel and in his contributions to benevolent objects, and it is perhaps worthy of note that he was the first dealer in the township that banished the sale of ardent spirits from his business.
