    • Au sujet de Joseph Soper Walton : "In a judicial sale held in 1834, his printing press, type and materials [S. H. Dickerson materials] were sold to Joseph S. Walton, the initiator of a Tory newspaper in Sherbrooke, the Farmers' Advocate and Townhips Gazette. [...] Joseph Soper Walton was born into a famous family of printers, publishers and booksellers from Montpelier, Vermont. A younger son of George Walton, Joseph was born in Peacham, Vt. in 1802. [...] From 1816 on, Joseph Walton was apprenticed as a typesetter and editor to their printing firm. [...] Later on, however, it seems that Joseph Soper Walton, Ezekiel's younger brother by 15 years, becam more and more involved in his elder's affairs over the years, "assisting" Ezekiel as editor and printer "for a while" (possibly ca 1823-1830), yet it appears he was never considered a true partner. As a matter of fact, Ezekiel Walton would give preference to his own sons, as he officially integrated them into the business in 1835, as E. P. Walton & Sons, Printers [...]. [...] Upon his arrival in Stanstead, ca 1832, Joseph Soper Walton was immediately associated with Asa Gaylord, who would be his business partner for almost 20 years. [...] Joseph Walton and Asa Gaylord probably planned their joint venture in Stanstead while both worked in the book trade in Montpelier. [...] Walton and Gaylord, however, did show excellent timing in their arrival in Stanstead. It was at a time when Silas Dickerson was experiencing terminal financial problems with his printing office. [...] In any case, Walton & Gaylord printed and issued their first books in 1833 and early 1834. [...] Later, from 1834 on, his involvement in his own newspapers - The Farmer's Advocate and The Sherbrooke Gazette - as editor, but also writing much of it content, no doubt stemmed from a strong prior experience and training in editorial activities. [...] He would continue publishing his Sherbrooke Gazette, as editor and proprietor, until 1869. Joseph Soper Walton passed away, aged 73, on April 27, 1875, and was buried in Sherbrooke next to his wife".
