For many years this was a school. In the 1940s the head mistress was Miss M. Barnes MA. Miss Barnes was American, and (so I understand) a graduate of Oxford University. Around 1950 she was replaced as headmistress by Miss Dorothy Darby. Miss Darby had come from a school in Northamptonshire (possibly Guilsborough). She drove a black pre-war Austin, either an Austin 8 or an Austin 10 Cambridge. I recall the car's registration number was BUE235. Prior to 1952 some of the teachers were: Miss M. Haddleton, Mrs A. C. Cowie, Miss White, Miss G. Alfry, Mrs Baldwin and Mrs Drury. Mrs P. Roper (nee Attock) was the principal, having taken over when the former principal, Miss Attock, died.
