The Discovery Museum Science and Space Center' is a non-profit organization aimed at educating and inspiring young children in science. The museum offers low cost access to exhibits, hands-on educational activities, and school programs which include virtual space tours and simulators. The Discovery Museum is open to the public, but extends certain benefits to schools and students.

Community

The Discovery Museum is very involved and connected with its community. 80,000 people are served annually through the door, and 25,000 people are served through community outreaches. It also serves school groups from 11 surrounding counties according to Beth Callahan, Director of Marketing and Public-Relations.

Contributing

While the museum receives roughly 8% of its funding from the city, the organization holds public fundraisers and welcomes donations. Its biggest fundraiser is “Robots and Jello Shots,” which is an adult “Funraiser/Friendraiser” held every September. All money from every fundraiser goes to scholarships and under-served classrooms. The museum accepts money donations online at its website, as well as vehicle donations. According to the organization’s website, donations are used to “add new exhibit displays, maintain…grounds, create new museum programs, keep…costs to visitors low and much more!”. The museum also relies on volunteers to help maintain and run the organization. There are volunteers of many ages and levels of expertise from “science novices to science professionals,” as stated on the organization’s website. Time commitments vary upon preference.
