East Sacramento is a neighborhood in Sacramento, California that is east of downtown and midtown and west of CSU, Sacramento. East Sacramento residential development began in the 1890s, and the area was annexed into Sacramento in 1911.
East Sacramento was also home to the Alhambra Theatre until 1973 when it was demolished and the East Sacramento Safeway was built. The Fabulous Forties neighborhood is made up of large tree-lined streets with large setback lots and in many cases multi-million dollar homes. St. Mary's Church is in the west on the corner of 58th st. and M st.
Since East Sacramento is predominantly residential and geographically isolated there are quite a few grocery stores within its borders. In the southeast corner at 56th St. and Folsom Blvd. there is a Save Mart, formerly Albertsons, formerly Lucky, and in the same shopping center is the much acclaimed Corti Brothers specialty grocery store. There used to be another Albertson's at 48th Street and J Street, formerly Lucky, but it closed on July 28th, 2005. The Safeway on Alhambra Blvd. at K St. replaced the beloved Alhambra Theatre and was the only major grocery store for Midtown residents until another was built on S St. in 2005.
Medical care is a staple of East Sacramento. There are two major area hospitals in East Sacramento. Sutter Memorial Hospital is located in the northeast and Mercy General Hospital is in the center off of J St.
The most notable park in East Sacramento is McKinley Park located off Alhambra Boulevard at H St. East Portal Park is the second largest park in East Sacramento and is located in the west off of M st. East Lawn Children's Park is a small park located next to the East Lawn Cemetery on Folsom Boulevard. Henshel Park is nestled in the north among a mostly residential area.
