Mission Statement

"The Newman Catholic Community serves the students, faculty and the families of Sacramento State and the surrounding colleges “to promote the well-being of higher education and society as a whole.” (Empowered by the Spirit USCCB 1985)

Programs and Volunteering

Church services for everyone, including the deaf. They host a 10:30 am service with deaf interpretation every Sunday. The Lazarus Ministry helps people with the hospitalization, illness, or loss of a loved one. Loaves and fishes provides love, hospitality, and generosity to those in need by providing food each 3rd Sunday from 8 am to 12:30 pm. Family Promise helps homeless families regain their self-worth by getting them homes for them and possibly jobs.

The Newman Catholic Community offers different community service opportunities for college students every month.

  • September ~ Feed the Hungry: Loaves and fishes, Street feeds
  • October ~ Give Drink to the Thirsty: Buy a water filter for a family in east Africa
  • November ~ Clothe the Naked: Refrain from personal clothes shopping, Give to our clothing drive
  • December ~ Shelter the Homeless: Habitat for Humanity home rebuild project
  • February ~ Comfort the sick: Shriners Hospital visit, Retirement home visit
  • March ~ Visit the Imprisoned: Folsom prison visit
  • April ~ Bury the Dead: Lazarus Ministry

When do the services meet?

The college group meets every Wednesday at 6:30 pm. Church services are every Sunday. Community service changes month to month. Lazarus ministry and Family Promise is there whenever someone needs it. Loaves and fishes occurs every 3rd Sunday in each month.

Who qualifies?

Lazarus Ministries ~ Families with ill, hospitalized, or recently passed away loved ones Church Services ~ Everyone Family Promise ~ for the homeless Loaves and fishes ~ anyone who is in need of hospitality and love, but most importantly food To participate in the monthly community services, you must be in college.
