Saca Community Learning Center is in North Sacramento, and is a facility of the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. According to Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS) webpage, SFBFS is "dedicated to assisting those in need by alleviating their immediate pain and problems and moving them toward self-sufficiency and financial independence."

Saca Community Learning Center provides free services and volunteers are needed. There are requirements before someone can volunteer. The minimum age is 10 and an individual needs to attend an 1.5 hr long orientation.  If you are interested in volunteering your time, receiving services, or making a donation please visit www.sacramentofoodbank.org.

Programs

Saca Community Learning Center offers these programs:

• Adult Education "provides one-on-one tutoring to adults in reading, writing, math, computer skills, resume building and English" (SFBFS). Qualifications:
  • "All services are free to the community and open to adults over the age of 18. Income verification is not required. Please visit the program during operation hours to complete a registration form and learn about the class schedule." All zip codes are allowed to attend this program. While Adult Education is in session, "PlayCare [will usually be] available for children ages 1-5" (SFBFS) and Adult Education is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
    • Monday 12-3pm and 6-8pm
    • Tuesday-Thursday 9am-3pm
    • Friday 9-2pm
• PlayCare is offered for children who are from the ages 1-5 to be in this program which "Prepares youth for kindergarten through interactive games and encourages parental involvement" (SFBFS). SFBFS site informs future clients about eligibility- "Children 1-5 years of age of parents attending Adult Education or Mother-Baby classes. A completed registration form and a copy of the child’s birth certificate are needed upon entry into the program. No financial information is required." PlayCare's Program is open Monday through Friday and the hours are:
  • Monday 6:00pm-8:00pm
  • Tuesday 9:00am-12:00pm
  • Wednesday 10:00am-1:00pm
  • Thursday 9:00am-12:00pm
  • Friday 9:00am-12:00pm
• Mother-Baby Program, which will become known as "Parent Education" in 2012, "Guide parents in raising children in a healthy and supportive manner. Diapers, formula, food and clothing are provided for parents attending educational workshops" (SFBFS). Mother-Baby Program's hours are:
  • Monday noon-8pm
  • Tuesday-Friday 10am-2:00pm
• Youth Academy "Provides enrichment for elementary-aged youth focusing on literacy and independent thinking" (SFBFS). Youth Academy's program goal is to help guide the youth to succeed in their academic, "character building, social development and community service" (SFBFS). SFBFS's site affirms that "The program is not a drop in after-school care as children are required to attend five days per week." The requirement is "students must be between 6-18 years of age" to be eligible for the Youth Academy Program (SFBFS). Youth Academy's Program is open on Monday through Thursday from 3pm to 6pm.

How can we make a difference?

As SFBFS stated, we can make a difference by:

• Donating our time and/or money (SFBFS). According to SFBFS, "For every $1 donated, $10 of products and services are returned to the community at no charge."
• Dropping off goods such as "gently-used clothing, school materials and baby supplies."
• Having a donation drive for "food, clothing or toy drive" in your neighborhood or business.
• Telling "friends, families and potential clients about what SFBFS accomplishes every day."
• Participating "in an event- Sign up to walk or run in the annual Run to Feed the Hungry on Thanksgiving Day" or sign up for Race for the Ring.

My name is Kathy Siong and I am a student at Sac State. I had volunteered in SFBFS Mobile Distribution and in the PlayCare Program before and it was a great experience. I was able to make a difference by volunteering and distributing the food that SFBFS provided for families who needed assistance to have a good meal. As a former volunteer, I would recommend anyone who is interested in volunteering for an organization to choose and volunteer at Saca Community Learning Center. It will be one of the best volunteering experiences and you will make a good difference in someone's life. —KathySiong
