DUI Awareness Events:
Bistro 33 and Yelp DUI Awareness Workshop
Denis hosted a workshop at Bistro 33 to help participants realize how easy it is to become impaired, and that impairment can happen before you reach the .08 BAC legal limit. Participants were given the alcoholic beverage they drink most often on a night out, and blew in the breathalyzer 15 minutes after each round of drinks. Denis answered DUI related questions from the audience between rounds of drinks and shared all the violations that give police a reason to stop you.
After 5 rounds of drinks were completed, the five participants were given one of the commonly issued field sobriety tests - the One Leg Stand, where test subjects had to lift one foot 6 inches off the ground while keeping both legs straight and arms at their sides counting out loud in the following manner.
"One thousand and one, one thousand and two, one thousand and three" and so on until told to stop.
After everyone completed the One Leg Stand test, Denis shared the results from each subject's breathalyzer and field sobriety test. The consensus is that you can very easily still feel impaired even if your BAC is less than .08
Denis Does the Davis Trinity
Although he is based in Sacramento, Denis is also very active in Yolo County. He noticed that a large percentage of his cases from that county are college students from UC Davis and immediately made it a goal to decrease the number of DUI arrests from UCD students.
In addition to creating a scholarship for UC Davis Picnic Week 2018, Denis focused on creating DUI awareness events in the Davis area to help students prevent future DUI arrests.
For his third awareness event in the college town, Denis completed the Davis Trinity - a bar crawl that UCD undergrads complete as a rite of passage. Students are known to get absurdly drunk after completion and Denis wanted to illustrate how BAC levels rise after each of the three mixed drinks.
To give a more accurate illustration to the local students, he picked two volunteers (one undergrad and one grad) to complete the challenge along with him.
Field Sobriety Tests and Breathalyzers for Sacramento Bike Messengers
When a legal courier service moved in next door to his office, Denis made friends with the bike messengers and realized that the bikers really have their own unique subculture. Denis hung out with the group on their weekly Friday bar crawl to see their levels of impairment in how well they were able to estimate BAC.
