2010-09-19 17:54:00 I have very fond memories of working at the Broken Egg in Santa Cruz in 1971 - 72 and loved it. I have often wanted to start my own Broken Egg as the food was so healthy and fresh, we made our own hot apple cider. I learned how to cook 4 omelets at one time and prepare the fruit bowl each day! 2011-02-13 22:54:44 Always enjoyed the scrambled egg plates with buttery toast and fresh fruit. Fine coffee too. Business slowed when all of the fast food places began offering breakfast too. .
2011-06-17 16:19:04 I was a cook at the Aptos store from 1982 - 1986. We had lines out the door every Sat and Sun. Some customers used to ask for tables close to the kitchen so they could watch the insanity. I was the guy with the white flat top. My brother sported a pomp for a while. Have been friends of the owner and his family since 1971. They still live in Aptos. Works potatoes recipe: Homefries (secret herb mix), ham, onions, mushrooms (pre-sauteed with sherry and butter). All cooked on the grill, then lay a slice of cheddar on top, put in broiler until melted. Top with a slice of avo and sour cream. - Mark Kretsch —22.214.171.124

2011-07-18 05:07:29 I used to manage the Broken Egg In Carmel. I once cooked 11 omellettes for a group. I could crack four eggs at a time. It was hard work but I loved the atmosphere. We had a redwood patio too. We did big business on weekends and weekday breakfasts but the rest of the time there was just too much competition. At one point Barry asked me to spend a day at the other branches to share what we knew and to learn how the other places did. It was interesting.I still dream about that place. I still like to make the vegetable soup too. Sadly the place closed down shortly after I left and became the Wagon Wheel. That was around '78 or '79. —188.8.131.52
2012-01-09 23:09:08 I was part of the Los Gatos crew. Some of us are still friends and get together regularly. I think we all remember the chaos of Saturday and Sunday mornings with great fondness. We had a cook for a while who added a great deal to the lexicon of the Egg. Omelets were made using ranch spores for example. To the poster looking for Potato Works: the base was home fried potatoes followed by portions of ham, green onions, mushrooms and cheese. It was topped with sour cream and avocado slices. Some of the regulars from the old days still get together at either the Great Bear coffee company or the Los Gatos Roasting Company, but their ranks have thinned a great deal in the past few years. I've lost touch with Barry Hutchinson, the original owner, and Wayne Davenport, who was the second manager for the LG Egg. Wayne later became the co-owner in Los Gatos until they lost their lease. 2012-12-15 11:49:00 Wayne Davenport moved to Washington state sometime around 1990 and opened a restaurant in Seattle called "My Friends Cafe" that was loosely based on the Broken Egg concept. I was stoked he reinvented "The Potato Works" at his new restaurant. Similar to the old LG Egg, He consistently had lines of people out the door. He sold that restaurant back around 2000. Not sure what he does now but lives in Snohomish, WA with wife Toni and near their daughter Jessica. - C. Hansen
