This entry refers to a departed business — a business that has closed or left town. Information here is mostly for historical reference.

Former Location
21231 East Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, CA 95062-4837
Former Owners
Robert & Carol Clark. Last owner, Steve Ide
Founder
Harry Buckhart.
Business Lifespan
1902-2002.

They made preservative-free, old-fashioned chocolate, fudge and toffee.

The business originally started in Watsonville in 1902, but moved to downtown Santa Cruz on Pacific Avenue in 1922. In 1936, the business moved to the historic landmark Lincoln's Windmill building on East Cliff Drive, which used to be a Los Robles Farm store that sold tulip bulbs. It was later bought by Steve Ide. He had to go to court to get the candy recipes included. He also discovered the plumbing in the Windmill building was too expensive to repair. In 1999 it moved the business to Capitola. When the lease was up and not renewed, the owner decided it would be less expensive to close it than to re-establish it.

It just closed when the lease was not renewed. The actress Zasu Pitts was acquainted with the early owner and may have worked in the store. She authored a book, "Candy Hits" by ZaSu Pitts and Edi Horton. Some have gone so far as to suggest her recipes came from the store. -Harlan]
