During December, the park is decorated with lights.

Watsonville City Plaza park is located on part of the former Bolsa del Pájaro Spanish Land Grant which was owned by the Rodriguez family and was given to the city by Sebastian Rodriguez in 1860 through the heirs to his estate.

In 1983 it was added to the National Registry of Historic Places.
