History
According to the official website of Gilroy: "John Cameron was born in Scotland in 1794. At the age of 19 he left England, using his mother's maiden name of Gilroy, and arrived in Monterey in 1814. He was baptized at the mission at Carmel in 1817 and took the name of Juan Bautista Gilroy. He then made his way to Rancho San Ysidro where he was employed by Ygnacio Ortega as a barrel maker. He married Clara Ortega in 1821 at Mission San Juan Bautista." He later became the municipal magistrate of the settlement. He died in 1869. The town became officially incorporated in 1870.
Businesses
Gilroy is known as the Garlic Capital of the world. More garlic is grown in other places (such as Fresno County) but more garlic is processed in Gilroy than anywhere else. Gilroy Garlic Festival is held in July. Gilroy Gardens, on State Route 152, is an amusement park. Some of the Tree Circus from Scotts Valley were moved there. Gilroy Premium Outlets is a collection of discount stores selling brand name merchandise.
Transportation
Greyhound Lines Inc. has a bus station on Monterey Street in Gilroy. The station is open Monday through Saturday. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority provides bus service to the area. Monterey-Salinas Transit's Line 55, stops in Gilroy. Amtrak runs a San Jose-Santa Barbara connection with a stop in Gilroy. Caltrain provides weekday commuter rail service from Gilroy to Santa Clara County and San Mateo Counties.
